GATHER ye rosebuds while ye may,
Old Time is still a-flying
Last night we heard from Shane Gordon (Associate Medical Director, NHS East) and Mark O'Connell (R&D Director, Probe Scientific) about the opportunities and challenges of bringing real-time diagnostics into medicine.
Cutting the time before a doctor has test results available is already delivering 75%+ reductions in referrals where Point of Care diagnostics are available, helping patients quicker and saving money. Consumers have more access to information through the internet and diagnostics available from their pharmacies, and doctors need to respond. But getting comprehensive, portable and reliable diagnostics into the hands of doctors is challenging in an increasingly regulated environment.
Many of the participants commenting spoke directly from their own clinical experience, relating the changes coming to shifts in responsibilities and skills. It was exciting to hear the interchange between practicioners and technologists from Addenbrookes, Cambridge Consultants, Grant Instruments, HealthUnlocked, Lab21, Lumora, Medical Device Technology, Nokia, Pathology Diagnostics, Philips, Psynova, Unilever and TTP amongst many others.
Cambridge has much to share about medical devices, with its combination of leading medical research, electronics and device capabilities. It is good that people make time to really connect.
